Over the weekend I felt a bit sad. The news that one of my favorite artists, Darwyn Cooke, was sick hit the internet on Friday and immediately I felt sick to my stomach because I had a bad feeling about his health (also it took nearly two hours to get to work, so Friday morning was not very fun). Then on Saturday morning news got out that he died. I cried for a few minutes. I was definitely not expecting to cry because I don’t know Darwyn personally (met him for a brief moment at NYCC in 2008), but the tears came and I was upset that such a talent would be taken away. I yelled a bit too. The frustration needed to come out. Cancer doesn’t see that you’re a legendary creator. Cancer doesn’t care about who it decides to strike. Do yourself a favor — if you don’t know who Darwyn Cooke is, Google him. Heck, I’ll do it for you: all you have to do is click here.

The sadness continued a bit to Sunday. I was almost not going to do a Curls strip because I wasn’t feeling it. All day I said to myself that Darwyn would have wanted people to draw comics, but it took a lot to get me going. Finally I started on Sunday night and did most of the coloring tonight. This might not be the best strip, but it’s in memory of Darwyn.

In other news, the comics WILL CONTINUE! As Curls Studio will be at Tidewater Comicon at the Virginia Beach Convention Center (Table A314) THIS WEEKEND. You can find the show floor map and all the details here: http://www.curls-studio.com/curls/tidewater-comicon-is-may-21-22-2016

I’ve started a Patreon site, right now it’s a “tip jar” where I plan on sharing behind-the-scenes sketches and other production material you won’t see elsewhere online. If you have one dollar — or a few dollars — to spare each month, please consider pledging!

XOXO,
Carolyn
