This strip reminds me of something that happened to me in high school… I kinda felt like Turtle Neck. I was one of – perhaps it was five people – nominated for Senior Superlative “Best Artist.” One of the other people nominated was my art friend (Shannon), another nominee was a more “popular” girl, and I don’t remember who the other people were who were nominated… or may be it was only us three?

At lunch my friends ate on the “Senior Stage” in the cafeteria, a special raised elevated area with only a handful of tables, and we discussed the Superlatives. They all told me I had no chance because the popular girl would win. She had a lot of friends and was active in student government and sports. So basically she had a hand in a bit of everything at the school. I had nothing against her, but I disliked how all my friends dismissed the possibility of me winning. I don’t think they were trying to hurt me, but they were very realistic and told me flat out that the Superlative wasn’t going to happen.

My friends were right. The popular girl did win. She got her photo in the back of the yearbook and was voted by her peers as “Best Artist,” but for me the payoff was also being named “Best Artist” at the Senior Awards, held right before graduation. This award was not chosen by the students – it was selected by the department and teachers. I got to wear a special medallion around my neck at the graduation ceremony. It is a handsome keepsake that I will remember forever. I will also always think of my great teachers, Mr. Evelyn and Ms. Dim.

What do you think Turtle Neck’s odds of winning are? Do you think Applause the Fighting Fish will train him to win?

Thanks for reading,
Carolyn
